An AI-Designed Lung Drug Also Seemed to Turn Back the Body's Clock

The quick version

A biotech company called Insilico Medicine used AI to help design a drug molecule, then tested it in people with a scarring lung disease. Looking back at the same trial data, researchers found that patients on the drug scored as biologically younger on six different measures of aging. It is an early, small result — 42 people — and no one has lived longer or gotten healthier in a way you could point to yet. But the finding was published in a respected journal, Nature Biotechnology, and it is getting attention.

What happened

The drug is called rentosertib. Insilico used its AI platform to pick a biological target — a protein called TNIK that appears to be involved in both tissue scarring and aging — and then to generate a molecule that would act on it. Going from "here is the target" to "here is a drug candidate" took about 18 months, which is fast by pharma standards.

The actual trial was for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a disease where the lungs stiffen and scar. On that front, lung function improved in the treated group while it declined in the placebo group.

The eye-catching part came from a second look at the data. Researchers ran patients' blood samples through six independently built "aging clocks" — AI models that estimate a person's biological age from proteins in the blood. All six pointed the same direction: patients on the 30 mg twice-daily dose looked roughly 3 to 4 years younger biologically after four weeks, and up to 6 years younger on some clocks. The effect seemed to be partly separate from the lung improvement.

Why it matters

Two things are notable here. First, it is a concrete example of an AI-designed molecule making it into human trials and producing real clinical data, not just a press release. Second, the aging result is interesting because the six clocks agree despite being built by different teams on different data. As Nobel laureate Michael Levitt put it, what is convincing is "not the size of the effect but the agreement."

What's next

Rentosertib is moving toward larger Phase III trials for the lung disease. The anti-aging claim is much earlier — it needs dedicated trials designed to measure aging, longer follow-up, and proof that a lower "biological age" score actually translates into people staying healthier. That is years away, and plenty of promising longevity findings have fizzled before.
